New York-Based Dancer/Choreographer
Artist-in-Residence for the Department of Dance
Nature of the Residency: Jasperse will be on campus from Monday, February 4, 2008, through Saturday, February 9, 2008, working with students from the Department of Dance on a choreographic process.
Public Presentation: At 2PM. on Saturday, February 9, 2008, in the Dance Theatre Mr. Jasperse and the students will present to the public the results of this collaborative process, followed by a Question and Answer Session. Free and open to the public.
Biographical Information: Dancer/Choreographer John Jasperse graduated from Sarah Lawrence College in 1985 and moved to New York City to live and work. He is founder and Artistic Director/Choreographer of John Jasperse Company. His work has been presented by festivals and presenting organizations in the United States, Brazil, Chile, Israel, Japan, and throughout Europe. Among the many awards presented to Mr. Jasperse work are the New York Dance and Performance ("Bessie") Award (2001) in recognition of his body of choreographic work, the Scrripps/ADF Primus-Tamiris Fellowship (1999), the Doris Duke Award (1998) as well as awards in Germany, France and Israel. He has been commissioned to create works for the Baryshnikov Dance Foundation, the Batsheva Dance Company in Tel Aviv, the Lyon Opera Ballet in France, and the Irish Modern Dance theatre in Dublin. And he has received support from – among others--the National Endowment for the Arts, The John Simon Guggenheim Foundation, and the New York Foundation for the Arts.
